Protection for Boaters

Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays appears to be the most important environmental factor involved with developing skin cancer. During the summer months, UV radiation tends to be greater.

To help prevent skin cancer while still having fun outdoors, regularly use sun protective practices while boating by regularly applying sunscreen and providing shade areas on board.

Boat Tops provide shade -
By having a bimini or dodger you are protecting yourself from the sun. Some fabrics used in marine applications have been endorsed by The Skin Cancer Foundation, an international organization dedicated to the prevention of skin cancer, for their ability to block harmful UV rays.

Keep out the wind and rain -
In addition, by adding enclosures, side curtains and tops, you can increase your boating pleasures even on less than perfect days.

Protection for Your Boat
You've invested a lot in your boat and it makes sense to keep it looking new for years to come.

When your boat is not in use or being stored, it's important to preserve your boat from destructive elements such as the sun, rain, and other weather issues, and even from being attacked by harmful insects:

A durable, custom-made boat cover can protect your boat from mold and mildew. Quality fabrics and skilled workmanship can extend the life of your boat significantly by protecting it from the elements, scratches, rust and fading.

Off-the-shelf boat covers are made to fit a wide variety of boats and may be baggy and collect water when it rains.

A custom boat cover is fitted to the exact shape of your boat in the way you want it to. Most reputable custom marine canvas shops use fabrics with UV rated materials that are colorfast and shrink and mildew resistant.

Project Descriptions / Features

We use Gore Tenara thread exclusively, because it is guaranteed to last without degrading or failure for the life of the fabric. Re-stitching weakens fabric, and increases leak potential. By fabricating with this exceptional thread, the life of your project is greatly extended.

The traditional dodger includes three front windows separated with vertical zippers, two windows in the wings, accessory mesh pockets inside the wing panels, as well as zipped frame pockets for convenient installation and removal. All non-laminate fabrics are cut-out and sealed with a hot-knife to prevent stretching and fraying. Patio500 marine vinyl is used for a full inside lining on all five window panels, as well as the grab area around the aft bow, providing additional strength, cleanliness, and appearance. The frame pocket zippers are installed in the center of the underside pockets, which allows for future zipper replacement without the need to re-stitch through the dodger top. All dodger edges are reinforced with 30ml vinyl and quality marine binding. Cover materials include Sunbrella or other quality marine fabric and binding of your choice, Strataglass 40ml press polished sheet clear vinyl, sturdy YKK #10 UV zippers, and quality Scoville stainless fasteners. Typically, a two-bow frame of heavy-duty one-inch 16-gauge one-inch stainless tubing and high-quality 316 stainless fittings supports the canvas. All eye-end fittings on the tubing are attached with stainless rivets, providing additional security.

The California-style dodger includes a two-bow bimini-top with zipped frame pockets for convenient installation and removal, five removable enclosure windows, and accessory mesh pockets inside the wing panels. All non-laminate fabrics are cut-out and sealed with a hot-knife to prevent stretching and fraying. The frame pocket zippers are installed in the center of the underside pocket, which allows for future zipper replacement without the need to re-stitch through the dodger top. Cover materials include Sunbrella or other quality marine fabric and binding of your choice, sturdy YKK #10 UV zippers, and Strataglass 40ml press polished sheet clear vinyl. Framework is constructed of heavy-duty one-inch stainless tubing and high-quality 316 stainless fittings. All eye-end fittings on the tubing are attached with stainless rivets, providing additional security.

For our hardtop dodger system, Lippincott Marine fabricates the rigid top. We then complete the project with five removable enclosure windows attached to the top with rail and Keder welt. This hardtop system has quality marine fabric covering the rigid top, which coordinates well with your other canvas and can later be recovered if needed. The hardtop dodger deluxe upgrade package adds side grabbars, aft grabrail, and white/red lighting features.

Dodger options/upgrades include:
• U-zip center window, to open/close the center dodger panel from the convenience and safety of the cockkpit.
• U-zip marine mesh window added to the center U-zip window.
• Stainless side grab-bars to help support the frame and provide grab bar along the outsides of the dodger.
• Stainless aft grab rail.
• High quality stainless support stanchions. Rigid stanchions and grab bars provide a very solid self-supporting framework and improved cockpit access.
• Basic to advanced cutouts to accommodate rigging, cleats, lines, and other obstacles.
• Five-piece quality marine fabric window covers, edges reinforced with 30ml vinyl and matching marine binding, attached with Scoville common-sense fasteners.

Dodger enclosure curtains for both the California and hardtop systems are constructed with Strataglass 40ml press polished-sheet clear vinyl. The fabric borders have edges finished with marine binding, and are fully lined with Patio500 marine vinyl inside, for additional strength, cleanliness, and appearance. All non-laminate fabrics are cut-out and sealed with a hot-knife to prevent stretching and fraying. Protection strips of marine fabric outside and Patio500 marine vinyl lining are included for all frame contact areas. Other materials include sturdy YKK #10 UV zippers, Scoville stainless fasteners, and chafe/reinforcement protection of Patio500 marine vinyl or Ebinger leather where needed.

Our traditional bimini-tops are made of Sunbrella or other quality marine fabric and binding of your choice, with zipped frame pockets, double-stitched seams, and sturdy YKK #10 UV zippers. All non-laminate fabrics are cut-out and sealed with a hot-knife to prevent stretching and fraying. Our fabric construction techniques minimize shrinkage, and provide three layers of fabric to reinforce all frame contact areas. The frame pocket zippers are installed in the center of the underside pockets, which allows for future zipper replacement without the need to re-stitch through the bimini-top. Our custom framing is fabricated using heavy-duty one-inch 16-gauge stainless steel tubing and quality 316 ss fittings. All eye-end fittings on the tubing are attached with ss rivets, providing additional security.

Bimini-top options/upgrades include:
• Top cutout with weather protection sock.
• Standard Strataglass view window with Sunbrella cover.
• Deluxe Strataglass view window with inside control lines to open/close the Sunbrella cover.

You may also need a dodger/bimini connector panel, which would attach to your dodger and bimini-top with protected/covered sturdy YKK #10 UV zippers. Connector options include:
• Panel made of quality marine fabric, finished with matching marine binding.
Or
• Panel made of quality marine fabric, with a Strataglass 30ml view window, Patio500 marine vinyl window facing, and finished with matching marine binding. Our project enclosure curtains are made of the clear vinyl or marine mesh of your choice. The fabric borders are fully lined with Patio500 marine vinyl inside, for additional strength, cleanliness, and appearance. All edges are finished with 30ml vinyl reinforcement and matching marine binding. Protection strips of matching fabric outside and Patio500 marine vinyl lining are included for all frame contact areas. Other materials include sturdy YKK #10 zippers, Scoville stainless fasteners, and chafe/reinforcement protection of Patio500 marine vinyl or Ebinger leather where needed.

Enclosure curtain options/upgrades include:
• U-zip ‘smile’ or ‘frown’ windows sewn into the panel, with a YKK #10 zipper protected behind matching marine binding. This option allows you to conveniently open/close the window without needing to unfasten the curtain edges.
• U-shaped ‘smile’ or ‘frown’ marine mesh window added to the panel, which may be permanently sewn down to the curtain, or installed with a YKK #10 zipper protected behind matching marine binding. Adding screens to a U-zip window in a clear vinyl curtain provides convenient four-season protection, without the necessity to install or store different panel types depending on the weather.
• Basic to advanced cutouts to accommodate rigging, cleats, lines, and other obstacles.

The mainsail covers are made of quality marine fabric, edges finished with 30ml vinyl reinforcement and matching marine binding. The front and back areas are also reinforced for protection. Hatch covers are made of quality marine fabric, and typically secure along the bottom edge with marine shock-cord or individual marine fasteners. An upgrade adds an additional layer of marine fabric and HVAC insulation under the top. This greatly reduces heat transmission year-round, and minimizes condensation weeping in cold weather.

Our handrail covers are made of quality marine fabric, edges finished with marine binding, and include two-inch wide webbing inside the bottom edges for structure and support of fasteners. They typically secure with Scoville stainless steel snaps between the handrail stand-offs.
